ADVANCED USER'S -- WINDOWS 3.1 ET4000 DRIVER INSTALLATION
The README.DOC file explains how to install the ET4000 drivers. An alternative
method to install ALL the ET4000 drivers and support files is described below.
The ET4000 drivers are in compressed format and MUST be expanded before
use. Before you start, you should have the files contained in the ZIP file
on a High Density 5 1/4" or 3 1/2" diskette or a separate directory on your
hard disk (i.e. C:\et4drv). The driver diskette can be used with all formats of
Windows Installation diskettes, i.e. 360k, 720k, 1.2meg and 1.4meg diskettes.
This is not the Microsoft recommended method for driver installation. This way
of installing copies the OEMSETUP.INF file included with the drivers
directly to the Windows SYSTEM directory. This will overwrite an existing
OEMSETUP.INF file, if one is present. You may have other OEMx.INF files
in the SYSTEM directory including perhaps, one for the ET4000 from a previous
driver release. The OEMx.INF files contain text, and describe the drivers you
may have added to Windows via the "Other (Requires disk provided by a hardware
manufacturer)" choice available within the Windows SETUP program. You need to
locate these files and view the contents of the files to find the OEMx.INF
for your older ET4000 drivers, that is if you have any currently installed.
The 'x' is usually a number starting with '0', but again depending on other
drivers you may have added, other OEMx.INF files may be present.
(i.e. OEM1.INF, OEM2.INF etc.)
You will know when you have found an ET4000 OEMx.INF file, the [display]
section of the file will contain ET4000 driver descriptions in it.
For example "ET4000 640x480 16 col." etc.
O.K., enough if you are still reading this you probably already know this.
Follow these steps:
1) Copy all the ET4000 driver files onto a diskette or a separate directory
on the hard disk. i.e. (C:\et4drv)
2) Make sure there is NO OEMSETUP.INF file in your SYSTEM directory.
(If there is one rename it to OEMSETUP.OLD or it will be overwritten)
(Note, is not likely that you will find an OEMSETUP.INF file)
3) If you DO HAVE some OEMx.INF files in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, find
the one for your older ET4000 drivers and rename it to OEMx.OLD.
('x' is a number usually 0)
4) Windows 3.1 includes a DOS program EXPAND.EXE found in the Windows directory.
Use this program to expand all the ET4000 driver files to your Windows 3.1
SYSTEM directory.
While in the \WINDOWS directory type:
EXPAND A:*.* \
or \
EXPAND B:*.* > choose whatever is appropriate
or / depending on where the ET4000 drivers
EXPAND C:\et4drv\*.* / are located.
6) The EXPAND program will prompt for the destination.
Enter the location for the expanded files.
(Example: C:\WINDOWS)
Enter your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM location as required,
Destination: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
The above will expand and copy all of the ET4000 drivers and other files into
the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
7) Rename the OEMSETUP.INF now contained in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
(This OEMSETUP.INF file is now the one from the ET4000 driver disk)
REN \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OEMSETUP.INF OEMx.INF
(where 'x' is the number from step 3 above)
or
(where 'x' is 0 if NO older ET4000 OEMx.INF was found)
8) If in step 2 you found an OEMSETUP.INF file,
(and renamed it to OEMSETUP.OLD)
REN \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OEMSETUP.OLD OEMSETUP.INF
Upon completion of the above, you can select any of the drivers by using the
Windows SETUP from DOS or within Windows to select the driver wish to use.
Note, this release includes Tseng/Sierra HiColor drivers for 32768 and
65535 simultaneous colors. If your select a HiColor driver which your board
can not support a brief message will appear in the upper left of your screen
"video driver unable to set desired mode"
before returning you back to the DOS prompt. If this occurs simply, run the
SETUP program again and choose a supported display mode.
Also, included are 1024x768 and 1280x1024 drivers which use the "Small Fonts"
for those of you with large screen displays. I had promised these to some of
you folks a while back, sorry for the delay.
