Tseng, W32p Windows 3.1 Video Driver Installation Instructions

** IMPORTANT **

The drivers named "W32p" in the Windows Setup use the Tseng W32p accelerator
features.

This driver disk is designed to allow you to select or change the video driver
for Windows 3.1 using the SETUP program on this diskette, OR using Windows
Setup. The SETUP on this diskette is executed from within Windows. Note that
these driver files are in Microsoft compressed format. You can not simply copy
them; you MUST run a SETUP program to install them. Simply copying the files
into your \Windows\System subdirectory WILL NOT work and may corrupt your
Windows installation.

Installing the drivers is a simple process:

Installation from floppy disk

1) It is good practice to make sure the diskette is write-protected.

2) Insert your Driver Diskette in the appropriate floppy drive.

3) In the program manager, press the ALT key and F to bring up the FILE menu.
Then press R (for RUN) and type (assuming the diskette is in drive A:)
A:SETUP.
The program will prompt you for any information it needs.

Installation from Hard Disk

There is no need to copy the installation diskette to hard disk. The
video utility that is included can switch drivers promptly, using
the information that SETUP will write to the WINDOWS and SYSTEM directories.
However if you do have a copy of these files in a hard disk directory,
you can install as follows:

1) In the program manager, press the ALT key and F to bring up the FILE menu.
Then press R (for RUN) and type (assuming the files are in, say,
D:\video\drivers):
D:\video\drivers\SETUP.
The program will prompt you for any information it needs.

------------------------------------------------------

In rare cases, SETUP will be unable to copy some of the installation files
because they are currently in use and cannot be replaced. If this happens,
SETUP will instruct you to exit Windows and rerun the same SETUP program in DOS
to complete the installation.

If you are having problems installing these drivers please contact your board
vendor for further assistance (as your vendor may have made some proprietary
enhancements that require custom drivers).

Also included are the Tseng HiColor/TrueColor drivers for 32K, 65K and 16Mil.
simultaneous colors. Some boards and monitors will not support some of the
higher resolutions, color depths, or video refresh rates. WHEN YOU SELECT ONE
OF THESE MODES, YOU WILL BE OFFERED A CHANCE TO PREVIEW IT. Select "Preview"
to determine whether you really can select the mode. If you select a video
refresh rate not available on the video board, the next highest available rate
will be selected.

If you select a mode that your monitor cannot support, Windows will start up,
but your screen may be unreadable. If this problem occurs, run the
WINDOWS SETUP program and choose a supported display mode. For example,
assuming your windows directory is on drive C:

c:
cd \windows
SETUP

and use the arrow keys to change the display.

-----------------------------------------------------------

THE VIDEO DRIVER UTILITY:

The SETUP program will install a handy utility program for changing drivers.
The utility enables you to quickly select the mode you want. In addition, you
can select the refresh rate. You can choose whether to install the utility in:
- its own program group
- the control panel
- the STARTUP group.

Selecting a video "mode" means choosing:

- a screen size, such as 800x600
- a color depth, such as 256 colors
- (in some cases) a font size for the program manager's ICONs, either
large or small. When you make this choice, you also tell Windows how many
pixels it should regard as a nominal inch on the screen. If you choose
"large fonts", some displays will be easier to read; if you choose "small
fonts, more information will fit on your screen.
- optionally, you can choose a refresh rate. Some monitors support higher
rates, such as the VESA 72 Hz standard. If your monitor supports higher rates,
you may find that the screen display is more stable and easier to read.

When selecting modes, you should bear in mind that if your monitor cannot
support your choice, the screen may become unreadable altogether.
If this happens, you can back out your choice by running the Microsoft
SETUP program, in the Windows directory, from DOS.

If the screen becomes unreadable, you should correct the problem promptly.
In some cases, an incorrect mode can damage a monitor. To recover, reboot
the system, and run the Windows SETUP program from DOS, to select a safe mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

If you subsequently need to deinstall the drivers, or if you frequently
switch video boards while using Windows, you may wish to consult the
Deinstall HELP provided by this SETUP program.

If you install another manufacturer's video board, and subsequently reinsert
this board, you should rerun this SETUP to make sure the correct files are
installed again.
