Introduction
============
This guide contains the information you need to install our Windows 95
drivers for the Hercules product. We recommend that you use our drivers
instead of the supplied Microsoft driver.
One of the best features of Windows 95 is its adaptability to the way
you work. No matter what the task, there's probably more than one way
of accomplishing it. This is certainly true with the installation of
display drivers. There are a few ways you can go about installing the
drivers, so rather than document every possible route you might choose
to take, we've covered a few possible methods. No matter how you install
the display drivers, Windows 95 makes it very intuitive, so it's hard
to go wrong.
These instructions apply to the first retail release of Windows 95.
If you're still using an interim build, the procedure may go a bit
differently. As we've mentioned above, however, the intuitive Windows
95 interface makes it hard to make a mistake, so we doubt that you'll
run into any problems.
About This Display Driver Archive
=================================
You've probably unpacked this archive to a temporary path on your hard
drive, like C:\TEMP. During the driver installation process, whenever
you're asked to insert the diskette containing your Windows 95 drivers,
specify the drive and directory in which you've unpacked this archive.
For example:
C:\TEMP
Once you've installed the drivers, you may delete the temporary copy.
You may want to keep a copy of the archive file in case you need to
install these new drivers again.
Installing Windows 95 After You've Installed Your Hercules Product
==================================================================
If your Hercules card is already in your system when you install Windows
95, you have two choices: you may install the high-resolution drivers as
part of the Windows 95 installation procedure, or you may wait until
after Windows 95 has been installed and select our high resolution
drivers using the Display Properties dialog box. If you'd like to use
this method, see "Using The Display Properties Dialog Box" below. To
install our drivers as part of the Windows 95 installation procedure,
insert our Windows Display Driver Diskette and specify the \WIN95
directory when prompted by the Hardware Installation Wizard. Depending
on the model you're installing, you may be asked to choose from a short
list of drivers. See "Which driver Do I Choose?" below. Later on, you
can select your desktop area, color palette, and monitor type using the
Display Properties dialog box. See "Using The Display Properties Dialog
Box" below.

Installing Your Hercules Product Into a Windows 95 System
=========================================================
If you've already installed Windows 95 on your system, installing your
new Hercules card is easy. Remove your old graphics card and install
your new Hercules product according to the instructions in our
Installation Guide, and then start your PC.
After Windows 95 starts, a dialog box titled "New Hardware Found" will
appear, and you'll be given a few options for installing the display
driver. Choose Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer, then
insert our Windows Display Driver Diskette into your diskette drive.
Specify the \WIN95 directory on the diskette.
Depending on the model of you're installing, you may be asked
to choose from a short list of drivers. See "Which driver Do I Choose?"
above. Later on, you can select your desktop area, color palette, and
monitor type using the Display Properties dialog box. See "Using The
Display Properties Dialog Box" below.
Using The Display Properties Dialog Box
=======================================
The Display Properties dialog box may be used for installing (or
reinstalling) a display driver or monitor adapter, or choosing your
desktop area (resolution), color palette (pixel depth), and system font
size.
You may open this dialog box at any point within Windows 95 by
clicking on the desktop with the right mouse button and selecting
Properties from the pop-up menu, or by launching My Computer by double
clicking its icon, selecting Control Panel, and then selecting Display.
From the Display Properties dialog box, select the Settings menu. From
here you may select your desktop area, color palette, and system font
size. To select a display or monitor driver, click the "Change Display
Type..." button near the bottom of the dialog box. This brings up the
Change Display Type dialog box.
If you'd like to install or reinstall your display driver, click the
"Change..." button in the "Adapter Type" section. This displays the
Select Device dialog box. If the driver for your Hercules product does
not appear, insert our Windows Display Driver Diskette into your
diskette drive, click Have Disk..., and specify the \WIN95 directory on
the diskette.
Depending on the model you're installing, you may be asked to
choose from a short list of drivers. See "Which driver Do I Choose?"
above. Remember to click Apply when you are back on the Settings menu.
To ensure that Windows 95 offers you all the resolutions that your card
and your monitor support, you'll want to tell Windows 95 what model of
monitor you have by clicking the "Change..." button in the "Monitor
Type" section. Choose your monitor model (or, if your monitor is not
listed, one of the standard monitor types) from the Select Device dialog
box. However, this will not automatically set the refresh rate at which
your card and monitor will operate. See "Setting The Refresh Rate,"
below, for instructions.
Setting The Refresh Rate
========================
Products in the Terminator family use the SETCRT.EXE program to set the
refresh rates at which the card will operate at various resolutions and
pixel depths. If you installed Windows 95 onto a PC in which you were
already running Windows 3.1 with your Hercules product, you probably
already have SETCRT.EXE in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
If you're installing your Terminator into a system that's already
running Windows 95, you'll want to add the SETCRT.EXE line to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT so you can use your card and monitor at high refresh rates.
With this driver release, you have your choice of two methods for doing
this:
1. Run the DOS-based INSTALL.EXE program according to the instructions
in our Installation Guide. It will help you select your monitor
model, and then place the appropriate SETCRT line in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT.
2. If you're handy with a text editor and you're familiar with your
monitor's capabilities, you can place the SETCRT.EXE command in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT file manually. Our Installation Guide contains a
table of SETCRT parameters for your Terminator product.
NOTE: DO NOT choose a monitor model or standard monitor type that
supports refresh rates that are higher than your monitor can support.
If you do, you may permanently damage your monitor. If you are unsure
of what monitor model or standard monitor type to select, please refer
to the documentation on your monitor or contact the manufacturer.
If you've placed the SETCRT.EXE command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT but you're
not getting the refresh rates you think you should be, get in touch with
us and we'll give you the assistance you need.
