README.TXT for Toshiba Card Manager Version 3.0 March 21, 1994

This file contains last minute information which was not included in
the user manual. In addition, refer to the following text files:

CARDS.TXT - This file lists those PCMCIA cards which have been verified
to work properly under the Toshiba Card Manager.

REMOVE.TXT - This file describes how to remove previous versions of
the Toshiba Card Manager, which is required for proper
installation of version 3.0.

ERRORMSG.TXT - This file contains a description of all error messages
which may be generated by Toshiba Card Manager.

= CARD MANAGER APPLICATIONS =
=============================

PCMSETUP
--------
At the end of PCMSETUP you should re-boot the system so that any
changes you made will become effective.

If your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is arranged with different blocks for
different boot configurations, you may need to manually modify
your AUTOEXEC.BAT and relocate the 'PATH=%PATH%;C:\PCMCPLUS3'
statement to the proper boot configuration block.

Do not use special characters (i.e. TAB) in your CONFIG.SYS.


PCMWIN
------
Under Associations, when in the file list or directory tree, use
the right and left arrows to go up and down through the file list
and directory tree.

Under Associations, the Enable check box is not accessible by the
keyboard, only by a mouse.

PCMWIN will not run if PCMSCD is not loaded in the CONFIG.SYS
file.

PCM
---
PCM may take a long time to read and display information for
Flash and SRAM cards.

In the Edit Configuration, if the Configuration Loaded is changed from
YES to NO but then PCM validates the configuration, the Configuration
Loaded will be changed back to YES. If you do not want that configuration
loaded, set Configuration Loaded to NO and DO NOT have PCM validate the
configuration.

PCMFDISK
--------
After partitioning an ATA card, you may need to either remove/insert
the card or reboot the system after exiting PCMFDISK before the new
partition information is recognized.

= CARDS =
=========

Using PCMCIA Network Cards
--------------------------
If you are using a PCMCIA Network card and allowing PCMSCD to
configure the card so that you do not need to use the
manufacturer's client driver, then you do not need to specify the
PCMCIA keyword in the NET.CFG file.

Using IBM Ethernet and Token Ring cards
---------------------------------------
When using either of the IBM cards or other card identified as an
IBM card, use PCM to configure the card. This is only necessary
if the card was not selected during PCMSETUP or you need to
change the card's settings.

Xircom Token Ring
-----------------
After unloading the network drivers and extracting the card, PCM
may report the card as still being inserted. Also, when the card
is removed, Card Manager may not beep.

Using PCMCIA Modems
-------------------
If you are using a PCMCIA modem which is not getting configured,
make sure that the /NOMODEM option is not being used on the
PCMSCD= line in the PCM.INI file.

Modem set for COM1 on 2 Slot Systems
------------------------------------
If you have configured your system and PCMSETUP to use a PCMCIA
card modem at COM1 and plan on using a 2nd modem card in the
other PCMCIA slot, you'll need to manually edit the PCM.INI file.
There is a COMORDER option in the [COM] class section which
should say 'COMORDER=1'. You'll need to add the COM port
selection for the 2nd modem; for example, change the line to read
'COMORDER=1,2'.

Using Ministor PCMCIA Hard Disk Cards (ATA)
-------------------------------------------
There was a problem with some Ministor PCMCIA Hard Disk Cards not
spinning up after they had spun down, so the spin down option
will not operate on any Ministor drives.

Western Digital Caviar and HP Kittyhawk Hard Disk Cards
-------------------------------------------------------
These two cards are known to not contain a CIS (Card Information
Structure). The CIS is used by PCM and PCMWIN to identify the
card and display the information about the card. Therefore these
cards will not be recognized by either PCM or PCMWIN, although
they will function correctly.

New Media Bus Toaster SCSI card
-------------------------------
It may be necessary to add configuration parameters on the BTASPI.SYS
device driver line in the CONFIG.SYS file. If an error occurs stating
that the Interrupt is not available, add parameters for the I/O port and
IRQ to the BTASPI.SYS line in the CONFIG.SYS file. For example, add
/P340 /Q10 to use port 340h and IRQ 10.

Cards Currently NOT Supported
-----------------------------
Fujitsu Ethernet - drivers are not Card Services aware.

Maxell 256kb Flash
Maxell 2MB Flash
These cards are incompatible with Toshiba Systems.

Please contact Toshiba Product Support for additional information

Using Flash Cards
-----------------
Flash memory cards may be listed as unconfigured by PCMWIN when the
card is actually configured. PCM will report these cards correctly.

The Association feature does not work with Flash cards (PCMWIN only).

On a two slot system, if two flash cards are inserted, PCM may
report them as SRAM cards.

You should avoid setting the write protect switch ON on a Flash card;
otherwise its operation may be unpredictable.

PCM is unable to identify Maxell and Intel Series I flash cards.

Reading Flash and SRAM cards may appear to take an unexpectedly long time,
but they will function correctly.

It is recommended to disable compression of Flash cards when using DBLSPACE,
by adding the /NOCOMP parameter on the MS-FLASH.EXE command line.

= PCM.INI FILE =
================

PCMSCD /NOMS
------------
Although this option was documented in the User's manual, the
/NOMS parameter is not supported.

PCMSS=/RS=x
-----------
Using the Reserved Socket option for PCMSS prevents Socket
Services from accessing that Socket. In PCM and PCMWIN you will
still see the socket as being present. In PCM, the socket will
always remain empty even if there is a card inserted in the
socket. In PCMWIN, the socket will also remain empty, but with
some cards it may show that there is a card that is Unconfigured
and had Information Unavailable.

= MISCELLANEOUS =
=================

High Memory Usage
-----------------
All of the Card Manager device drivers can be loaded high with
the exception of CNFIGNAM.EXE. CNFIGNAM.EXE needs to be loaded
in low memory. Loading CNFIGNAM.EXE in high memory can cause the
system to lock up while the Card Manager drivers are loading.

DBLFLASH.EXE
------------
DBLFLASH.EXE has been removed from the Microsoft Flash File System II provided
with Toshiba Card Manager. This file is not available at this time.

Resume Support
--------------
With systems requiring APM.SYS loaded in CONFIG.SYS (T4500, T4600) APM.SYS
Version 1.54 or greater is required. Please contact Toshiba Product Support
for an updated driver if required.

Toshiba Card Manager Version 3.0 supports resume mode. APM.SYS (on T4500 &
T4600 only) and POWER.EXE must loaded in CONFIG.SYS. POWER must be enabled
for resume to function correctly.

In Windows Setup, the system type must be 'MS-DOS System with APM' in order
for resume to function correctly with APM.SYS/POWER.EXE and Toshiba Card
Manager Version 3.0.

System Files
------------
When editing system configuration files (CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, Windows
SYSTEM.INI, Windows WIN.INI), avoid removing comments placed in these
files by Toshiba Card Manager. These are used as markers to identify
areas that were modified.

= User Manual Updates =
=======================
pg. 6-8: The comments for PCMRMAN should be removed since they are
only applicable to the CONFIG.SYS file, and this section
applies to the PCM.INI file.

pg.6-11: The default for /SIZE= is 16, for a 16KB window size.

pg.6-14: The COMOrder option in the PCM.INI file can have up to four
parameters, supporting up to four different PCMCIA devices in
four different slots. The syntax is comorder=a,b,c,d.

pg.6-17: The descriptor=x is defined as
Bit Description
0-2 COM Number
3 COM Card
4 IBM Token Ring
5 IBM Ethernet
6-15 Reserved

pg.6-17: Memory_x=a,b,c,d
Where d is the offset for the card memory and is currently
only used by the IBM Ethernet and IBM Token Ring cards.

pg.B-2: The defaults for PCMFFCS.EXE are /BASE=CC and /SIZE=16.

pg.B-3: The PCMFFCS /SIZE command option has five possible values.
The /SIZE=16 is the default and is what is recommended rather
than the larger 32KB size window.
