side of the PCB.

This label contains the FCC Registration Number and Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) for this
equipment. You must, upon request, provide this information to the telephone company. The REN is
useful to determine the quantity of devices you may connect to your telephone line and still have all of
those devices ring when your telephone number is called. In most, but not all areas, the sum of the
RENs of all devices connected to one line should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain of the number
of devices you may connect to your line, as determined by the REN, you should contact your local
telephone company to determine the maximum REN for your calling area.

FAX BRANDING
This device complies with the fax branding requirements of the telephone consumer protection act of

notice is not practical, you will be notified as soon as possible. You will be informed of your right to
file a complaint with the FCC.

RIGHTS OF THE TELEPHONE COMPANY
Your telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures that
could affect the proper functioning of your equipment. If they do, you will be notified in advance to
give you an opportunity to maintain uninterrupted telephone service.

MALFUNCTION OF THE EQUIPMENT
In the event this equipment should fail to operate properly, disconnect the unit from the telephone line.
Try using another FCC approved telephone in the same jack. If the trouble persists, call the telephone
company service bureau. If the trouble does not persist and appears to be with this unit, disconnect
the unit until it is repaired. Please note that the telephone company may ask that you disconnect this
equipment from the telephone network until the problem has been corrected or until you are sure that
the equipment is not malfunctioning.

Tips for Troubleshooting

Modem doesn't respond to AT commands

Make sure the COM port settings in the software match the hardware configuration.

Can't see AT commands

Turn the Echo Commands on by restoring default settings (AT&F&W)

No dial tone

Make sure the modem's LINE jack is connected to the outside phone line. Make sure on one else is using
another extension. For certain digital phone lines, try adding "X1" to the dialing string (as in "ATX1DT").

Modem dials remote fax and then hangs up

Add "S7=120" to the initialization
string; this ex tends the time allowed for connection. Try changing the dialing method from tone to pulse.
Add commas in the phone book entries for the fax machine you're having trouble with; each comma causes a
two-second pause. Especially after using 0 or 9 to select an outside line. Set the minimum fax connection
speed to 2400 BPS.

Using your Data Modem

When Modems Call Each Other

When one modem calls another, the answering modem sends out a signal to identify itself, to determine the
nature of the call (fax or data), and to offer a communication speed. The calling modem replies with a
similar signal, and the modems negotiate speed and other characteristics of the call. Most modems can "fall
back" to a lower speed if the other modem cannot accommodate their maximum speed.

The Noises

Normally, your modem lets you hear these signals as a confirmation that the connection is established.
(You can configure the modem to remain silent during this phase of communication. See the on-line Help
for details).

Data Communications Software

Modems require communications software to be able to connect with other modems. The Data/Fax
software included with your modem allows you to send and receive faxes. Your modem can also work with
most data communications programs. This section describes typical characteristics of several popular data
communications software and on-line services.

AT Commands

AT (or "attention") commands tell your modem to perform a wide range of tasks, from the simple (such as
hanging up or changing speaker volume) to the complex (error correction, data compression, and the like).

Common AT commands include:

AT&F Reset the modem to its factory configuration.
AT DT 5550000 Dial the number 555-0000.
ATH Hang up the phone (ending the call).

See Appendix A for a complete list of the AT commands recognized by your
ASPEN Modem with PnP.

Initialization Strings

Initialization strings send AT commands to the modem to enable and disable modem functions. Depending
on how you are using your modem, there may be times when altering the initialization string improves the
modem's performance. Initialization strings are usually set up in the communications program you are using
with the modem. We've included some suggestions here in response to our customers' most frequently asked
questions.

Some communications programs supply the "AT" portion of the command. Consult the documentation for
your communications software to see whether you should include or omit the "AT". If you enter an
initialization string in the Modem Settings dialog box of you Telephony application, do not include the
"AT".

Keep in mind that various telephony and communications applications offer configuration choices that may
override parts of an initialization string you enter manually.

Service and Technical Support

Your `ASPEN Modem with PnP' includes free technical support
and is covered under a Five-year limited warranty. When contacting ASPEN
Technologies Inc. either for technical assistance or to send a unit in for repair,
please have the following information available:

Product Name ____________________
Serial No ____________________
Version ____________________
Purchase Date ____________________
Dealer ____________________
Computer Model ____________________

Before You Call Us

1. Make sure the modem card is fully inserted in the expansion slot.
2. Make sure the phone cable from the wall is plugged into the "LINE" jack at the back of the modem card.
3. Run both INSTALL.BAT to install the Plug and Play software and SETUP.EXE to install the
Data/Fax software program in Windows.
4. Run CONFIG.EXE to autoconfigure the modem. CONFIG.EXE is normally in the \SPNP directory.
5. If you already have another Plug and Play device installed on your computer, run the custom Plug and
Play installation, choose "Install alternate driver," and follow the screen prompts from there.
6. When you fax, if your regular printer driver keeps popping up, you'll need to change printers to the Fax
printer driver. Some programs have an option to do this. Others require you to use the Print Manager
control panel to set up the Fax printer driver as the default printer, or in Windows95 select the
properties of a printer and designate it as the default printer.
8. If the Fax printer driver keeps popping up when you want to use your regular printer, do the reverse of
Step 7.

Registration

When running the registration program for various Telephony applications you may find that you can't get
through or the registration program doesn't make a connection. This is not a sign that your modem is not
working, only that the registration computer is busy.
