Hi
whenver I boot my system, it takes a very long time to boot with any operating system for that matter.
The following is the config of my system : -
Intel 2.4 ghz Processor
865 chipset Mercury Mother board
256 mb ram
80 gb hdd
OS\'s installed on the system : - Win XP, Win2k and Win 2000 server.
In my office booting from a windows 2000 takes about approx. 70 seconds (completely).
But when my system boots it takes approx... 200 seconds.
The situation is that at the place where it asks you to press cntrl+alt+del, even after I press them..it does not respond immediately. After 15 seconds it works....then I put my id and password and login.
Then I reach my desktop....it again takes 30 seconds to bring up the tray icons (which are Norton Antivirus, LAN, Graphics, speaker, Zonealarm.).
During this time, the desktop icons are not visible at all !! I cannot do anything except to wait for the system to comeup.
Due to this problem I have had bad sugestions from people and have ended up in reinstalling my OS about 4-5 times in 6 months duration. It is getting very frustrated.
These are the application that are installed on my system : -
Office XP, Zone ALarm, Yahoo Messenger, Hotfixes for Win2k, win2k Service pack 4, NFS 2 game.
My system tools indicate that I have \"Problem components\" which is the Graphics card and two USB ports.
Please let me know if there is any other information you would like to have to solve this problem........Somebody please help.
X-( :_| :( :( :(
To get your graphics working correctly I think you may need to reinstall your video driver. USB drivers may also be needed.
When you reinstalled your operating system, did you do a clean install (format the hard drive and then install) or did you Repair or Upgrade your system?
Have you checked for any spyware?
Download MSCONFIG for Win2000 from here.
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html
Save it to the Windows or Winnt folder. Click Start, Run, Msconfig. Have a look in the Startup tab and see what is being started/loaded during the boot process. There may be several item that can be removed. If you remove an item, it can be returned by running Msconfig and replacing the tick.
Try that and see how you go. Post back with ANY questions about this.
Hey !!
Thank you for your quick response. I had clean installed the operating system last time but before that I had it repaired. I have already downloaded MSCONFIG onto my system and I will get back with the applications and processess running on my system with help of msconfig.
And could you let me know as how should I have to proceed to reinstall USB ports....(i.e. uninstall them completely form device manager and then go on with reinstallation or do I just start off with reinstallation from the motherboards CD which contains these files).
Bye.;p
Post the make/model number of your motherboard and I will see if I can find any updated drivers for them.
Also chech the Event Viewer and see if that is displaying any error messages.
I will get you the make and model of my mother board tommorrow.
I installed the Msconfig tool...and disabled few processess that were running in it which I felt were not necessary at all.
After that I went through the error messages in Event viewer....and found quite a no. of them....here are the extracts of those.
1... Source : -MRxSmb
Event ID 8003
Description : - "the master browser has received a server announcement from the computer SIFY that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transaport NetBT_Tcpip. The master browser is stopping or an aelection is being forced".
2. Source : - DCOM
Event ID 10005
Description : - DCOM got error "the service did not respond to the start or control in atimely fashion. "attempting top start the service ccPwdSvc with arguments in order to run the server".
3. Source : - Cdrom

5. Source : -PlugPlayManager

These are the errors that get generated evry time the system reboots.
I do also get page dump or BSOD giving "stop errors" every alternate day on my system...
My friend said that this could be that the hard drive is about to crash or is not working correctly.......................I ran a diagnostic tool called "Memory 86" on my system to check the memory and it gave said me that there were about 2200 errors.
I worry what's going on....As it is a assembled system and not compay manufactured.
Let me know if you need any more information....?
Looks like you may have a faulty piece of RAM. If it is still under warranty take it back to where you purchased it from with the MEM86 printout. (Make sure you back up your data first!!!!!) If not under warranty, get another piece of RAM and try swapping it with any pieces you have. See if you can isolate the faulty module.
Hi
Today i installed another RAM wich is in good working condition has got no problems in it.
But after I did that, the same problem seesm to continue.
I also went ahead and reinstalled the operating system after I had the Ram installed on m,yt machine but that too did not help me wither.
I have eliminated the errors which I used to ger frequently in event manager. There are no more errors while booting the system.
The system has been scaned for virus two days back.
I also run spyware everyday and make sure that no spyare is left behind.
The data bus connecting the motherboard and harddisk has also been replaced with one that is working good.
After all this the same problem seems to continue.
The problem is that : -when i boot my system i get this option to choose an OS. I choose win 2000 after that it starts booting....
Then at the screen where it displays windows 2000's logo and welcome screen is where i am gettin stuck for 30-40 seconds. It looks like my hard disk is inactive for that time duration. and then when i Reach the place where i press "cntrl+alt+del" to login, I get stuck there for 20-30 seconds more.
Could you let me know what exactly seems to be the problem here ?
i would be grateful to person solving this problem.
hi,
had the similar problem and I desactivated AVG Antivirus autoupdate service ...
(I do updates manually)
Try to disable automatic update: Antivirus, firewall, windows ... everything that startup automatically ...
hope it helps ...
Thanks to all who have replied to my question.
I have tried all the steps that you have suggested and nothing seems to be working.
But I found the real culprit which was making this problem.
It was my Hard Disk !!!!!!!!
The harddisk is not good and does not get detected very fast so Windows used to wait for it to get detected.
I replced my harddisk with another one which was running good and now my windows boots fatser than ever.
I am also going to get my harddisk replaced with that of a new one.
Thanks once again.
Glad you got it sorted out.:D
