I recently had my hard disk fail. I replaced it and restored the operating System (XP Home edition), applications and user files. All seems OK except that I have no sound.
Looking inside the machine shows that the sound output comes straight off the motherboard. I have checked the obvious things (plugs in, power on, volumes not muted).
The Control Panel Option “Sounds and Audio Devices? says that we have “No Audio Device?.
Device Manager, under “Sound video and game controllers? reports
Audio codecs
Legacy audio drivers
Legacy video capture devices
Media control devices
MPU-401 Compatible midi device
Standard games port
Video codecs
R-click and “properties? on the MPU-401 says that it is
“on PCI standard ISA bridge? (and that it is working properly)
The driver is reported to be from Microsoft, dated 01/07/2001 and with version number 5.1.2535.0. The file seems to be
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32\DRIVERS\DRMK.SYS
I tried the automatic “search for new driver? but it reports that nothing better could be found.
I have run a Belarc report on the machine. I can’t get the whole of it into a conveniently readable format, but I think that the main points are that my main circuit board is
Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7NVM400 Rev 2.xx
Bus Clock: 166 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 3.00 08/06/2004
Under “Multimedia? it reports
MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
Standard Game Port
Despite what “Device Manager? says, I wonder if I am missing a driver?
I would be very grateful for any advice.

PS this is my second try at posting this problem. I think that the first one failed. Many apologies if this is a duplicate.
