I don't know if this will help you, but I had a problem trying to get my old Visioneer 5800 to work with Vista. The solution for me was not what everyone else tried using the compatibility wizard. I have an old version of Paint Shop Pro installed with my Vista Home Premium. I plugged the scanner in the USB and turned the power on. I then opened up Paint Shop Pro. In the section marked Import, I chose the TWAIN and Acquire. It found the scanner. It called it 58xx not the 5800. It works like a charm and bypasses having to install the paperport bundled software. I had tried everything before in the normal manner, but this was the way to get around all the frustrations of using a Windows OS. On this computer, I also have a (Kubuntu 7.10) LINUX distro installed on a seperate harddrive. It booted from the CD for the LINUX installation faster then the VISTA boots from the SATA harddrive. The LINUX recognises the scanner and the integrated graphics and sound of the computer. It's amazing to me that Microsoft still chooses to be so greedy with their proprietary drivers and operating systems. I use the LINUX more than the VISTA, but like the challenge of figuring out stuff on the computer. Also the LINUX OS recognises the Vista harddrive and allows sharing on a network. The VISTA recognises that their is another harddrive, but won't allow you to open it as you can with the LINUX.
