FINALLY ! I got mine to work.
Download the driver for the scanner from the canon web site, even though it only says up to XP. It usually saves to your Temp folder. Once downloaded Vista will throw a fit and say it doesn't work...ignore that. Go into you temp, open the download, unzip it - if needed copy out of the subfolder right into the temp folder (try without this last step first). Plug in your scanner and try installing it - let it fail. Then, go into your control panel, device manager, find your scanner - right click "update driver software" go in and tell it where to look - here is where it tells you the driver isn't encoded properly BUT it gives you the option to install it anyway and it works just great - it'll re-organize in your device manager under imaging devices when done.
backwards, frustrating, and confusing, but at least it will work !
good luck !!!

Did you get it working with Windows Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?

I can confirm that using the XP driver seems to work with Vista 32bit + the CanoScan N650U. It was a supreme pain in the rump (Thanks for nothing, Canon). I had to download the Canon XP driver package onto an XP machine and "install" it there. Once the driver files were installed on THAT machine, I copied the entire folder onto a SD card and swapped it into my new Vista machine. I then followed the instructions above:
plug in scanner
let the install fail
go to device manager in control panel
choose the scanner option (which should indicate a problem)
choose "update driver"
browse the directory you just grabbed from the XP machine
It will complain about the driver not being signed. Just click OK/Allow/whatever. I was then able to scan in photos using Photoshop CS3. I didn't try installing the scanning tools that came with the Scanner.
Hope that helps someone.

Great. I had wasted a day before finding this tip. I updated the driver in the way described which got the calibration cycle carried out but also had to uninstall canongear toolbox and reinstall it before it worked properly. I was tempted not to reinstall all the software but the small print suggests that something is included that is essential even for bare scanning.

The process posted by "ebhsetdesign" worked for me, too. It tends to a bit roundabout and even brings back memories of installing drivers under Windows 3.1 (remember that?). One would think that all we'd have to do is run the driver's .EXE and it would be a done deal, but noooooooooooo.
Hey, I'm just grateful that these Canon drivers and toolbox pgms run without problem under Vista...unlike MANY other programs I have come to rely upon for my work.

I was able to get my CanoScan N65U working under Vista Ultimate32. For some reason the usa.canon.com site listed below no longer has the (Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows XP) driver avalable for download.

However I fond it on the canon.ie (Irland) site. The name of the download is "ScanGear CS-U" Here is the address

Hope this helps
