I have tried everything to install Windows 98SE on my refurbished Thinkpad 600E. From trying to install it from the Windows 98SE CD to copying all the CD to the hard drive and installing it from there. Nothing is working. If I install it from the the CD, when I get to the point of the SETUP, after choosing Boot from CD and Start Windows 98 Setup from CD, it takes me then to the DOS blue screen which tells me to press Enter to continue setup, then it states that setup is preparing to install Windows, please wait while setup initializes, press Enter to continue. After I press Enter a screen pops up that says Please remove any floppy disks from your drives and press any ket to restart your system. Well, I don't have a floppy disk drive, so I just hit Enter, then it restarts and starts the process all over.

When I attempt to install Win98SE from the hard drive after I have copied all info from the CD to the hard drive, at the c:\ prompt I enter the file name I copied all into to, c:\win98 and the type setup and it then states, This program cannot be run in DOS mode. What now? Please help if you can. Thanks!
how the hell did i miss this post ?

sorry i really did not see this.

ok windows 95 / 98 /98se /me does not set up direct from cdrom .

it needs a boot up floppy to start the install.

the floppy installs a basic cdrom driver needed by the setup.

thats why you can't install windows 98 on that laptop.

now you can download the floppy from this link and make it on any machine that has a floppy drive.
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

download the windows 98se oem disk.

when you have that sitting on your desktop just double click the file and follow what its telling you to make that disk.

now to install 98se you need to follow this.

put that floppy disk in the laptop,
start the laptop so it boots from that disk.
when you get the menu choose.
start pc with cdrom support.

wait for the disk to finish  pay close attention to the screen as that floppy will give your cdrom drive a " drive letter " when that finished   you looking at the a>

at that a> you type

setup :E

i used E to show you one possible drive letter but you put in what letter that floppy gave your drive.
Thanks! It's installed and working!
