Hi All. I currently manage a small (5 Computers) computer lab. The problem I am facing is that files really build up on the hard drive from everybody saving them. We are currently on a networked system, thus I was thinking about something along the lines of a server for storage. I have a spare Computer with a pentium 4, 512MB Ram, Windows XP Pro, 180GB HDD that I would like to use.
My Question is,what software would allow people to login to the computer, save their files to the server, then log back out and nobody else have access to their files? I will also need a program to delete the files on the local HDD (Biggest one = 2.1GB). I would need this without breaking the bank Smile . All the computers are outfitted pretty well, Windows 98 Being the Lowest OS, and 1GB being the smallest hard drive, all processors are PII or above.
Thanks in advance
I think what you are looking for is a reconfiguration here. not more software.. setting up say a domain using win 2k on these systems would allow you to configure policys like that and to create an H: drive (networked to the server) where people could save thier personal files if you have a copy of win2k or even old NT4 you can do this. im not sure the exact configurations maybe davey (please feel free to chime in here daveyTongue)  knows the in's and outs of configuring the systems. once you set this up you would need to create accounts with passwords for each user. anyone logging in would have to be pre-approved. lock out changes to the local hard disks and only allow users to save files to thier home folders.
PS: it would also allow you to manage security and virus management easier
